Best AI Girlfriend Apps of 2026
There are dozens of AI companion apps and every one of them claims to be the most realistic. We went further than the marketing pages: we read the shipped code, pulled the company registrations, and checked the refund terms buried in the small print. Here is how the six biggest platforms actually compare.

The 6 best AI girlfriend apps, ranked
Secrets AI
The deepest feature set in the category, and the only one whose memory architecture is genuinely novel.
Secrets AI runs the most technically ambitious stack of any platform benchmarked. Its second-generation memory system, an entry-based "Lorebook" with sections for cast, world, relationship, facts and chronicle, lets a character accumulate structured history that the user can audit and edit. Nothing else here comes close on that axis.
What we liked
- Five subscription tiers (Free, Lite, Plus, Premium, Ultimate) across monthly, quarterly, biannual and annual billing.
- Token currency branded "Moments", tracked in a double-entry ledger with 53 distinct transaction reasons and paired refund paths.
- Two-generation memory system mid-migration: a legacy fact store and a structured Lorebook with versioned, user-approvable entries.
- Group chat, interactive branching stories, episodic video, user-to-user tipping and a creator payout programme.
What we didn't
- Token pricing on top of a subscription makes true monthly cost hard to predict.
- Ranked below Candy AI on brand recognition, so less third-party coverage exists.
| Price from | $13.33 Premium, billed annually |
|---|---|
| Rolling monthly | $19.99 |
| Plans | Free, Lite, Plus, Premium, Ultimate |
| Memory system | Lorebook + legacy |
| Characters | 175 official characters, 1,410 public user-created |
Candy AI
The category default. Broadest appeal, most polished onboarding, fewest rough edges.
Candy AI is the most widely recommended platform in the category and the onboarding shows why: character selection, first message and image generation all land inside a minute. It is not the deepest system here, but it is the most consistently finished one.
What we liked
- Operated by EverAI Limited, registered in Malta under company number C107181.
- Same parent operates DreamGF, a separate platform in the same category.
- Runs on a Rails stack with a curated character roster and a generate-image flow gated behind sign-in.
What we didn't
- Memory is conversational rather than structured, so long-term continuity is weaker than Secrets AI.
- In January 2025 Bellingcat documented Candy AI advertising appearing on a non-consensual deepfake site, distributed through its own affiliate programme. EverAI says it terminated the publisher responsible.
- No group chat or live voice calls.
| Price from | $5.99 Entry tier, annual billing |
|---|---|
| Rolling monthly | $12.99 |
| Plans | Free, Premium |
| Memory system | Conversational |
| Characters | Large curated roster plus user-created characters |
Nomi AI
The one built for companionship rather than gratification.
Nomi is the outlier here. It targets sustained relationship simulation over explicit content, and its recall across long conversations is the best of any platform in this set that is not Secrets AI.
What we liked
- Free tier available to try before paying.
What we didn't
- Image generation is well behind the media-led platforms.
- No token economy, which is simpler but less flexible.
| Price from | $15.99 Monthly |
|---|---|
| Rolling monthly | $15.99 |
| Plans | Free, Paid |
| Memory system | Persistent |
| Characters | User-created only |
DreamGF
Candy AI's sibling, aimed at character creation rather than a curated roster.
DreamGF shares a parent company with Candy AI and overlaps heavily on capability. The distinction is emphasis: DreamGF leads with the character generator where Candy AI leads with its curated roster.
What we liked
- Operated by EverAI Limited, the same Maltese parent as Candy AI.
What we didn't
- Substantial capability overlap with Candy AI makes the choice between them largely cosmetic.
| Price from | $9.99 Entry tier |
|---|---|
| Rolling monthly | $19.99 |
| Plans | Free, Bronze, Silver, Gold |
| Memory system | Conversational |
| Characters | Generator-led |
CrushOn AI
Character breadth over polish. Strong if you want variety and few filters.
CrushOn leans on an enormous community-generated character library and minimal content restriction. Quality varies widely between characters because almost all of them are user-made.
What we liked
- Free tier available to try before paying.
What we didn't
- Inconsistent character quality.
- Media generation lags the leaders.
| Price from | $5.99 Entry tier |
|---|---|
| Rolling monthly | $12.99 |
| Plans | Free, Standard, Deluxe |
| Memory system | Conversational |
| Characters | Very large community library |
Swipey AI
Excellent onboarding wrapped around billing terms we cannot recommend.
Swipey has the strongest acquisition funnel in the category: a ten-step character builder that has you name your companion before it asks for an account. The product behind it is ordinary, and the billing terms are the most aggressive we reviewed.
What we liked
- Operated by INVAI LTD, registered in Cyprus under number HE458964, incorporated 17 April 2024.
- Free usage is capped at 5 messages before a hard paywall, stated in section 9 of its own terms.
- Section 10.4 of its terms declares all purchases "final and non-refundable under any circumstances".
- Terms of service are dated 1 December 2021, predating the operating company by more than two years.
What we didn't
- A blanket no-refund policy is very likely unenforceable against UK and EU consumers, who retain statutory cancellation rights regardless.
- Dedicated chargeback-help pages rank for both of its billing descriptors, indicating elevated dispute volume.
- Documented reports of subscriptions being charged after cancellation.
| Price from | $39.99 After a 5-message free allowance |
|---|---|
| Rolling monthly | $39.99 |
| Plans | Free (5 messages), Subscription |
| Memory system | Conversational |
| Characters | User-generated only |
How to choose the right AI companion
Memory matters more than anything else
Almost every platform in this category can hold a convincing conversation for ten minutes. The difference shows up in week three. Most apps only remember the current chat window, so your companion quietly forgets your job, your friends and every detail you told it last Tuesday. A small number build structured, persistent memory you can actually inspect and edit. If continuity matters to you, that single feature should decide your choice.
Watch the token economy, not the sticker price
A $5.99 subscription is not cheaper than a $13.33 one if images cost you extra on the first and are included on the second. Most platforms run a separate token currency for media generation on top of the monthly fee. Work out roughly how many images you would generate in a month and price that in before subscribing.
Read the refund clause first
This is the part nobody checks. At least one platform in our list declares every purchase final and non-refundable under any circumstances, which is very likely unenforceable if you are in the UK or EU, but still means you will have to argue for your own money. Two minutes in the terms page can save you a month of emails.
Know who you are actually paying
These platforms are operated by real companies in real jurisdictions, and some are far more transparent than others. We list the operating entity and registration number for every platform we cover, because a company you can identify is a company you can hold to account.
Frequently asked questions
How are these rankings decided?
Every platform is scored 0 to 10 on six weighted dimensions: conversation, memory, media, voice, value and trust. The composite is a weighted average, and the weights are published on the methodology page. Placement cannot be bought.
Do you earn money from these links?
Yes. Some outbound links are affiliate links and we may earn a commission if you subscribe. This never affects scoring or position. Platforms we score poorly stay scored poorly, and several of the lowest-scoring platforms here pay the highest commissions in the category.
What actually separates these platforms?
Memory architecture, more than anything. Most platforms only remember the current conversation. A small number build structured, persistent, user-editable memory, and that is the single biggest determinant of whether a companion feels continuous over weeks rather than minutes.
Are AI companion subscriptions safe to cancel?
Usually, but read the refund clause before subscribing. At least one platform in this set declares all purchases non-refundable under any circumstances, which is very likely unenforceable against UK and EU consumers but still means you will have to argue for your money.
Is any of this private?
Treat none of it as private. Conversations are stored server-side and most operators reserve the right to review flagged content. Never share financial details, addresses or passwords with an AI companion.
Do free tiers actually work?
They vary enormously. Some give you a genuine ongoing allowance, others stop after as few as five messages. We list the exact cutoff for each platform rather than just marking it "free".
