How are these rankings decided?
Every platform is scored 0 to 10 on six weighted dimensions: conversation, memory, media, voice, value and trust. The composite is a weighted average, and the weights are published on the methodology page. Placement cannot be bought.

What actually separates these platforms?
Memory architecture, more than anything. Most platforms only remember the current conversation. A small number build structured, persistent, user-editable memory, and that is the single biggest determinant of whether a companion feels continuous over weeks rather than minutes.
Are AI companion subscriptions safe to cancel?
Usually, but read the refund clause before subscribing. At least one platform in this set declares all purchases non-refundable under any circumstances, which is very likely unenforceable against UK and EU consumers but still means you will have to argue for your money.
Is any of this private?
Treat none of it as private. Conversations are stored server-side and most operators reserve the right to review flagged content. Never share financial details, addresses or passwords with an AI companion.
Do free tiers actually work?
